5 Tips for a Healthy Dog Coat

Dog Services

We can all appreciate a shiny coat. It’s one of the easiest ways to tell your if your dog is healthy and looked after. Great health on the inside shows on the outside, so it’s no surprise that there isn’t only one way to get your dog’s coat gleaming and glossy.

Here are our Top 5 Tips:

  1. Diet

Like with humans, diet is a key factor for healthy hair and skin. If your dog is fed on low-quality, cheap kibble, you can’t expect their fur to glow. Dogs need a highly nutritious, protein-rich diet that also contains healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. Many are now turning to a raw-food diet that is full of fresh foods in order to ensure their dog’s optimum health and many converts claim a vast improvement in coat quality when they switched. For more information on raw feeding, see our blog: The Raw War.

2. Supplements

Some are not yet ready to make the switch to raw food, but this doesn’t mean you can’t add healthy supplements to your dog’s diet. Not only will these help those luscious locks, but they are great for digestion, bone and joint health. 3. Bathing

In general, dogs should get a good bath about once a month. Make sure you double shampoo to ensure thorough cleansing and use a dog-specific shampoo, not a human one as these can be too harsh on their skin. It’s also a good idea to use a conditioner too for extra shine!

4. Brushing

Invest in the right brush for your breed. Some dogs need a de-shedding tool to help move dead hair and skin, others will need a detangler – it depends on their coat. Brushing regularly is not only beneficial for grooming purposes, but it can also be a valuable bonding time between you and your dog. Paying close attention to all areas of your dog’s anatomy can also allow you to spot anything unusual that might need vet attention, such as lumps or parasites.

5. Parasite Prevention

Parasites such as fleas, worms and ticks can cause all manner of complications for your dog, not least of all is itchy skin and hair loss. Make sure you keep on top of all vaccinations and treatments and team with your grooming routine to help ensure your dog stays creepy-crawly free!
